We all know when the house needs a good dusting, when the floors need a mop and when the vacuum needs a run.

But some parts of your home are a lot more likely to be neglected than others – for instance, do you know how often you should be cleaning your pillows?

Home expert Lynsey Clarke tells Britain’s The Sun newspaper that the bedroom needs a lot more attention than it often gets.

Your doona or duvet needs to be washed every five months and replaced every five years. And we’re not talking about the cover – we’re talking the whole thing! Dust mites are a huge problem, and it’s best to stay on top of them.

Pillows need to go in the washing machine every three-to-six months, and replaced every ten years, says Lynsey.

Fluffy toys may be fun to cuddle up to in bed, but Lynsey says one in four may be contaminated with faecal matter, and that means they should be washed whenever your child is ill – or every six months.

Most of us don’t need to be told to wash our undies at least once a week, but Lynsey advises replacing them yearly. Pyjamas and sheets should be washed weekly.

And just finally, make sure your handbag is always clean – with the average bag claimed to carry six times more bacteria than a loo seat!
