As the weather warms up, there’s a new cool drink vying for a spot in our hands – and no, it’s not a green juice.

Matcha has well and truly made the leap from niche café order to mainstream favourite, and Soul Origin is putting its own spin on the trend with an iced matcha range.

Think strawberry, mango, blueberry and even white chocolate goodies (yum!) – alongside more traditional options.

And if tracking down a tiny speciality café has been standing between you and your matcha fix? Good news: with Soul Origin stores around the country, getting your hands on your favourite green drink just got a whole lot easier.

So, what does matcha actually taste like?

Made from finely ground green tea leaves, matcha has a distinctive earthy, slightly bitter flavour – which is exactly why pairing it with something sweet or fruity works so well.

And Soul Origin National Coffee Manager Sam Taylor says making matcha more approachable was definitely part of the plan.

“We didn’t want to simply put matcha on the menu because it was trending. We wanted to understand what people loved about it – but also what stopped other people from trying it,” he says.

“Our approach was to start with a really high-quality matcha and then make it fun, approachable and full of flavour.”

And let’s be real: they nailed the brief.

Meet your matcha

If you’re already a fan, there are plenty of ways to shake up your usual order. And if you’re matcha-curious? Consider this your easy way in.

The Strawberry Matcha pairs earthy matcha with sweet strawberry purée for a fruity twist, while Mango Matcha brings a more tropical flavour to the mix. Blueberry Matcha combines creamy milk and matcha with tangy blueberry, while those with a sweet tooth might want to make a beeline for White Chocolate Matcha.

“Strawberry and mango gave customers an easy entry point into matcha, while our more traditional options still deliver for people who already love the category,” says Sam.

“What’s been most exciting is seeing customers who told us they weren’t matcha drinkers try one and come back for another.”

Prefer to keep things simple? You can, of course, opt for the classic Iced Matcha. Or, if choosing between coffee and matcha is simply a decision you refuse to make (fair!), Soul Origin’s Dirty Matcha combines them, thanks to an added shot of espresso.

Looks like our spring coffee run just got a little more interesting!
