The newly-installed bridge collapsed over a six-lane highway, crushing at least eight vehicles.

‘There are eight vehicles that are trapped underneath as far as we know and we are going to try and get to them as quickly as we can,’ Mayor Carlos Gimenez told CNN.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department said on Twitter that ‘multiple patients’ had been injured, although authorities are still yet to confirm the exact number.

US Senator Bill Nelson of Florida told CBS Miami that there were at 6-10 fatalities as a result of the tragedy.

The new bridge was installed on Sunday and wasn’t due to be opened to the public until 2019. It was built as a way to provide pedestrians direct access to the campus from student housing without needing to cross the highway.

Updates to come.
