A four-year-old boy has been left bloodied and traumatised after being attacked by wallabies in far north Queensland.
Elijah Deacon’s mother was forced to fight off the mob after he suffered deep scratches and bites.
Elijah was playing with his brother at a sports field in Cairns when the animals chased him down and knocked him to the ground.
His distraught mother, Riana, has told 7NEWS the attack was relentless and vicious.
She says she managed to fight the animals off, before they started chasing her.
Elijah has required 25 stitches and remains in Cairns Hospital.
Wildlife carer Shai Ager expressed shock at the attack, saying it’s out of character for wallabies.
“I don’t think many people have heard of cases like this,” she said.
“We’re not too sure what’s provoked it.
“But it’s a really sad situation.
“We can’t have kids being attacked by any type of animal, especially by something most people see as cute, beautiful and fluffy creatures, which they generally are.”
