An Egyptian woman who is though to weight between 450-600 kg was flown in a modified cargo plane to Mumbai, India, for treatment that will hopefully save her life.
Diagnosed as a child with elephantiasis, which caused her limbs to swell, Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, 36, began to gain an incredible amount of weight over the next decades due to hypothyroidism and lymphoedema which have caused excessive fluid retention.

A stroke several years ago also robbed her of movement in her left arm and leg, and has affected her speech. She also lives want type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and gout.
A wall was removed from the room where she has spent the last 25 years confned to her bed. She was then lifted by crane to a truck, and flown in a modified cargo plan to India. Her hospital room in India was fitted with modified doors and a strengthened bed.
Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, who has taken on Eman’s case for no fee, explains her treatment as a combination of surgeries and diet changes to help Eman get her life back.
The doctor and Eman’s family have been raising money to help deal with the costs of treatment.
‘For those people who think this is only about what she eats, that is not true,’ the doctor explains.
‘It’s a journey which will be tough, but it’s a journey which will give us good results.’
