While touring the northern town of Akureyri in Iceland, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson was asked by student what his stance on pineapple on pizza was.

Jóhannesson then declared that not only does he not like pineapple on pizza, he would ban the topping if it were in his power to do so.

News outlets jumped on the joke, pinning Jóhannesson for his ‘extreme’ views on the fruit on top of pizzas.

In a Facebook post titled ‘A statement on the pizza controvery’ the President clarified that he has no plans to try and ban the food and he bares it no ill will in general. In fact, he prefers seafood on his pizzas.

I like pineapples, just not on pizza. I do not have the power to make laws which forbid people to put pineapples on their pizza. I am glad that I do not hold such power. Presidents should not have unlimited power. I would not want to hold this position if I could pass laws forbidding that which I don´t like. I would not want to live in such a country. For pizzas, I recommend seafood.

The Icelandic leader boasts an approval rating of over 90%. A former political historian, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson famously turned down a 20% salary increase, and donates 10% of his pre-tax salary to charity.
