The father and step-mother of a 7-year-old boy have pleaded guilty of his murder after DNA confirmed his remains had been stashed in a bran on their property.
Adrian Jones’s body was discovered when police visited the properly of his father, Michael A. Jones, 46, and his step-mother, Heather, 31, to investigate a domestic disturbance.
After obtaining a search warrant and conducting DNA testing it was confirmed that the body was Adrian – who is thought to have died sometime between September and October, 2015.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Sheryl Lidtke told the Kansas City Star that Adrian was effectively ‘starved to death’ in what she describes as the ‘most heinous’ crime of her career.
Adrian’s devastated grandmother, Judy Conway, said she had no idea of the extent of the danger Adrian was in since the children were home-schooled and rarely in contact.
‘This could have been prevented,’ she said. ‘If I would have been able to see them, I would have known what was happening.’
Heather Jones has been sentenced to 30 years and 8 months prison time for first-degree murder and child abuse, while Michael is yet to be sentenced but is facing 25 years without parole for first-degree murder.
