In a tragic twist of fate, a man has died during a romantic underwater marriage proposal.
Steven Weber, from the USA, was on dream holiday in Tanzania with his soulmate Kenesha Antoine when he decided to ask her to be his wife.
The couple were staying in overwater accommodation and Steven swam underneath their room and held up a sign that read: ‘I can’t hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you. I love you more every day. Will you please be my wife. MARRY ME!’
In a video posted to social media, Kenesha can be heard whooping and laughing with delight behind the camera while Steven takes out a box with an engagement ring in and holds it up to the window. He then swims out of shot and looks as though he will surface. But sadly Steven drowned before he managed to hear Kenesha’s answer to his marriage proposal.
In a heartbreaking Facebook post, Kenesha describes what happened.
‘You never emerged from those depths, so you never got to hear my answer, “Yes! Yes! A million times, yes, I will marry you!!”’ she wrote. ‘We never got to embrace and celebrate the beginning of the rest of our lives together, as the best day of our lives turned into the worst, in the cruelest twist of fate imaginable.’
Kenesha added that she hoped that wherever Steven was, he was seeing the irony in the situation.
‘And knowing him, always quick with an off-color joke, he’s probably entertaining someone with a story about how he royally screwed up that proposal and died while being extra.,’ she wrote.
Steven’s family are now fundraising to bring his body home as he had no holiday insurance and the cost of flying him home is mounting up.
‘We lost this beautiful soul on Thursday, September 19, 2019. He was with the love of his life, doing what he loved in life – adventure. Words cannot express the void that now exists in the hearts of everyone he loved and who loved him,’ reads the Go Fund Me.
The fundraiser currently sits at $3,590 of their $25,000 goal.
