A BBC radio announcer has been fired after making an offensive tweet about Prince Harry and Meghan’s baby son, Archie.
British broadcaster Danny Baker, 61, was sacked after he shared a royal baby tweet which included a picture of a chimpanzee.
The tweet quickly caused outrage and was taken to be a racist comment on baby Archie’s ethnicity, as the royal bub has African-American heritage.
The photo was a black-and-white image showing a man and woman holding hands with a chimpanzee wearing a suit, which he captioned: ‘Royal baby leaves hospital’.
While the offensive picture was promptly deleted, Baker was quickly booted from his announcer position at the BBC.
Baker later said the tweet was a misinterpreted ‘joke’, offering apologies to the newborn royal baby.
‘[It was] supposed to be a joke about royals vs circus animals in posh clothes but interpreted as about monkeys & race,’ he said.
‘Enormous mistake, for sure. Grotesque. Anyway, here’s to ya Archie, Sorry mate.’
According to Metro.co.uk, BBC Radio 5 Live controller Jonathan Wall told staff in an email that Baker had shown ‘poor judgement’.
‘This was a serious error of judgment and goes against the values we as a station aim to embody. Danny’s a brilliant broadcaster but will no longer be presenting a weekly show with us,’ Wall said.
