A Newcastle man is recovering in hospital after his arm was allegedly ripped off in a horror dog attack.

Mechanic Brendan Clark, 43, was working alone in a yard in Coonamble on June 21 when he was allegedly approached by two 50-kilo pig hunting dogs who launched at him. In his fight to fend them off, Mr Clark’s right arm was so badly damaged it later had to be removed.

The dogs are reported to have been destroyed almost immediately.

Yesterday (July 3 2019) a 53-year-old man was arrested by police in Coonamble and charged with four offences including being the owner of a menacing dog that does not comply with section 51 or 56; failing to comply with menacing dog control requirements; hindering an investigation of a serious indictable offence; and grievous bodily harm by a negligent act.

He was granted conditional bail to front Coonamble Local Court on July 16.

Friends of Brendan Clark, who goes by the nickname ‘Bear’, are now fundraising to help get him back on his feet. Describing him as a a ‘dear friend,’ they say he’s ‘always willing to help somebody and put himself last.’

The fundraiser reads: ‘Brendon we love you mate and we want to see you bounce back to happiness… let’s donate to a wonderful human being and top mate.’

Speaking to the Newcastle Herald from his bed at John Hunter hospital, Brendan said he’s still fighting infection in his amputated arm and is having operations every other day, as well as flashbacks. He’s also struggling with the prospect of facing life with just one arm.

‘I was a mechanic,” he said. ‘I was right handed. This has really thrown a spanner in, but all we can do is wait until we work out what range of movement I have and what ability, and what kind of independence I’ll have. But I’m learning, by the hour, how limited life is going to be. Even going to the toilet… what a nightmare.’
