A New Zealand mum who refused to vaccinate her son has revealed he almost died from measles.

Alison Edwards-Lasenby decided not to give her son Cameron the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine because she had heard about a study linking the vaccine with autism, the NZ Herald reported.

When that study was discredited, Alison didn’t revisit her decision.

Then, when Cameron was 13 he was struck down by measles and ended up in hospital with a deadly illness.

Now, Alison is campaigning for parents to stay informed in order to do what’s best for their children.

She told NZME’s The Hits radio station, ‘If you make a decision based on the information that you have at the time, it’s really important to revisit that. I didn’t do that and consequently my son contracted the measles virus.’

Cameron was initially diagnosed with the flu before a rash appeared. When his concerned mum took him to a doctor, she was told he had to get to hospital as soon as possible.

There, the teenager was put into isolation and Alison was told he was at risk of brain damage or even death as a result of the measles virus.

Thankfully, Cameron recovered.

Alison said she ‘wasn’t proud’ of what happened but explained she had believed she had done the best thing for her son at the time due to the information in the later debunked study.
