11 ways to save on clothes

Get more bang for your buck out of your wardrobe with these handy tips!

1. Only buy what you can pay for

If using a credit card, ensure you pay off the entire balance when it’s due. Paying interest on clothes means you’re paying a lot more for them. Even better, only pay cash – it makes you realise how much you’re spending!

2. Shop at thrift stores in a wealthy area

You could be amazed at the bargains you score!

3. Repair the clothes you own

Those boots with the worn-out heels? Take them to a cobbler. The dress that’s now too big? Take it to a seamstress. Hem your own pants, dresses and skirts using hem tape and an iron.

4. Buy clothes that fit

Buying something too small because you think you’ll lose weight later is a gamble. Even if you do, you may not like the way it looks on you.

5. Never buy shoes that hurt

Don’t believe the assistant when she says they’ll stretch. They might, but not before your feet are covered in painful blisters.

6. Make a list and stick to it

Don’t window shop or browse online – it’s tempting fate. And don’t shop when feeling down. Find a less expensive form of therapy, like chatting with a friend over the phone.

7. Don’t buy it just because it’s cheap

Look at the tag AFTER you decide you love it. It may hurt if it’s out of your price range, but it will stop you buying it just because it’s cheap.

8. Ask for a discount

The worst that can happen is that you won’t get one.

9. Don’t pay for ‘free shipping’

If ‘free shipping’ requires a minimum purchase amount, it makes you search for more stuff to buy to meet the requirement.

10. Only shop at stores that have a good returns policy

If it’s lost its allure by the time you get home, you won’t wear the cost.

11. Make sure it’s a good match

Ensure you have at least three other items in your closet you can wear the new piece with, or three upcoming occasions when you can wear it.
