Conducted by US brand Tommy John, the survey saw 1000 people take part to air their dirty laundry about their hygiene habits.

According to the results, 45 per cent of participants admitted to having worn the same pair of underwear for two or more days.

More disturbingly, thirteen per cent claimed to have worn the same pair for a week or more.

Men also proved to be more relaxed about their laundry schedule, with males 2.5 times more likely as women to wear the same undies for more than a week.

The survey also reported that 46 per cent of Americans have had the same pair of underwear for one year or more, claiming that undies can often contain up to 10,000 living bacteria even after being washed.

‘Over time, underwear accumulates various types of problematic microorganisms and fungal germs that can increase your susceptibility to certain illnesses, like yeast infections and urinary tract infections, among others,’ they stated.
