Should we have a 9-to-5 school day?

Would it suit working parents more?

It’s the question working parents are starting to ask themselves: why does the school day not reflect the working day?

And now the idea of a 9-to-5 school day is being discussed after a US report found the school day is so misaligned it is causing up to $55 billion damage to the US economy.

The study also found the burden was greatest on lower earners who didn’t have money to pay for extra childcare.

With 66 per cent of Australians working five days a week school hours are viewed as out of date by some.

But some educators say longer hours would impact on kids’ performance.
