Monique might not make the most useful first mate, but she’s definitely the most unusual.
The hen has been sailing around the globe with Frenchman Guirec Soudee, 24, since May 2014.
The pair have set off from the Canary Islands and have since visited the Carribbean and the Arctic.

Guirec told the BBC he doesn’t mind that Monique often chickens out of the hard graft.
‘Compared with people, she doesn’t complain at all,’ he said.
‘She follows me everywhere, and doesn’t create any problems. All I need to do is shout ‘Monique!’ and she will come to me, sit on me, give me company.’
When not taking in the stunning views, Monique lays the odd egg.
And when the sea gets choppy, she is put away safely in her hutch before her feathers can get ruffled.
Monique doesn’t like to stick her beak into Guirec’s plans, but the pair are set to travel to Canada together soon.
But it’s not all plain sailing for the duo.

‘I won’t lie, she can get on my nerves sometimes,’ Guirec admitted.
We’re sure they’ve got many more adventures ahead of them!
