Horrifying!

It was in the research lab at work where Dr Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo met fellow doctor George Blumenschein, 50. And despite him being in a long-term relationship with live-in girlfriend, Evette Toney, the pair embarked on an 18-month affair.

A co-worker described Ana as being ‘infatuated’. Then, Ana discovered that George and his girlfriend were trying for a baby and she became enraged and confronted him.

But a few days later, when she invited him around for breakfast, it seemed as though all was forgiven. ‘I got this expensive coffee. Come over,’ she said.

Once there, George tried some of the coffee which he noticed tasted sweet. At around 11am, George started to feel light-headed. By 8pm, he could barely walk and went to hospital.Doctors realised he had an alarming amount of ethylene glycol in his urine. A colourless, odourless substance with a sweet taste, it was available in the lab at his work. He’d been poisoned!

Although he survived, George was left with just 40 per cent kidney function and a shortened lifespan.

Five months after the poisoning, Ana was arrested. During the trial, prosecutors argued that Ana had a ‘fatal attraction’ to George. They said she’d poisoned his coffee after feeling abandoned when she found out he was planning to have a baby with his girlfriend.

In her defence, several of her cancer patients spoke about how Ana had saved their life. But despite her impressive past, in September 2014, a jury at Harris County District Court found Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo guilty of aggravated assault and she was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
