Nadya Suleman, or ‘Octomom’ as she’s become widely dubbed, has spoken out about how she’s turned her back on fame to embrace a vegan, celibate lifestyle.
As an unemployed mother-of-six, Nadya, or Natalie as she prefers to be called, caused worldwide controversy in 2009 with her decision to give birth to octuplets via IVF.
Natalie reveals that her life as Octomom saw her life take a dark turn. To make ends meat she started to work in porn and strip clubs, and claims she started taking drugs and self-medicating with alcohol.
It’s only now that the 42-year-old mother of 14 has found her centre.
Natalie reveals it was a ‘guardian angel’ that eventually gave her the strength to put her ‘seedy’ life behind her, after a rather peculiar encounter.
‘I was in a strip club in Florida in February 2013, and this very tall man, this stranger came in,’ she tells New Idea. ‘He walked straight to me and looked straight into my eyes. He took my hand and grabbed my arm and said in a very gentle, but firm way: ‘You don’t have to do this.’ He repeated it five times.’
Natalie explains she couldn’t wipe away the tears that were streaming down her face, and when she finally composed herself the man was gone.
From that moment on, Natalie asserts: ‘I knew I had to be my healthy self again.’
Natali had six children from her first five rounds of IVF – Elijah, 16, Amerah, 15, Joshua, 14, Aidan, 12, and 11-year-old twins Calyssa and Caleb. And then octuplets – Makai, Josiah, Isaiah, Jonah, Maliyah, Jeremiah, Nariyah and Noah – who all turn nine in January.
Currently, Natalie’s octuplets are the only surviving set in the world.
Caring for 14 children, Natalie claims she is not looking for love and is happy living a celibate lifestyle.
Confessing she was ‘very foolish, immature and selfish’ to have so many children, and didn’t understand the consequences that the time.
With that candid confession, Natalie is focused on her children.
