A woman left in a coma for 28 year after a terrible car crash has miraculously gained consciousness.

Munira Abdulla, from the Middle East, suffered a catastrophic brain injury after a bus rammed into her car in 1991.

Munira was only 28 at the time and was picking up her four-year-old son, Omar, from school in the United Arab Emirates.

The young mother stayed unresponsive and in a vegetative state for nearly three decades – until last year.

In 2018, Munira’s son Omar heard her ‘calling his name’ for the first time in 28 years.

‘She was making strange sounds and I kept calling the doctors to examine her, they said everything was normal,’ Omar told The National.

‘Then three days later I woke up to the sound of someone calling my name. It was her! She was calling my name, I was flying with joy; for years I have dreamt of this moment, and my name was the first word she said.’

When Omar excitably told doctors that his mother was talking again, they did not believe him at first.

But since regaining consciousness, Munira has returned to a hospital in Abu Dhabi and is continually improving.

She can recite prayers, answer questions and tells people when she is experiencing pain.

‘The reason I shared her story is to tell people not to lose hope on their loved ones; don’t consider them dead when they are in such a state,’ Omar added.

‘All those years the doctors told me she was a hopeless case, and that there was no point of the treatment I was seeking for her, but whenever in doubt I put myself in her place and did whatever I could to improve her condition.’
