This Salvos donor was caught out by a by-law
When Dan Alessio, 78, from Melbourne, donated a box of books to charity, he never expected to regret it.
But Mr Alessio’s generosity was repaid with a $322 fine.
The hairdresser took his box to a Salvation Army store, but as it was closed he left it outside.
That’s when his local council used CCTV to track him down through his car number place, and issued him with the fine.
After he appealed Darebin Council refused to cancel his fine, explaining that under its by-laws it is permitted to issue spot fines to people who leave items outside charity shops.
Mr Alession told the Northcote Leader, ‘My only mistake was not to bring it in when the shop was open,’ adding he would need to work for a week to pay the fine.
The Salvation Army also advises that leaving donations outside stores is illegal, adding they could get damaged or cause a hazard.
