When Charlie Mason’s grandmother, Bianca Bais, shared a photo of her 16-month-old grandson on life support she pleaded with parents to do what they can to prevent the spread of the deadly disease.
Sadly, Charlie succumbed to the infection yesterday, prompting calls for hasty vaccinations.
There are five main strains of the disease in Australia and vaccines for all of them, but only the C-strain is free under the National Immunisation Program. Charlie’s death was caused by the B strain, the vaccine for which can cost upwards of $400.
Charlie’s grandmother, Bianca Bais, said Charlie’s mother thought her son’s ‘red dots’ were chickenpox and has urged parents to educate themselves about how fast the ‘cruel and ugly disease’ attacks.
