But did you know that it’s printed right there on the carton? And no it’s NOT the best before date!

On every carton of eggs there is a three digit number that can tell you exactly how long it has been since that batch of eggs was laid!

It’s called the Julian Code and simply is a counter of the days of the year. So 001 means the eggs were laid on January first and 076 is the 17th of March and so on.

According to Kidspot, eggs can sit on supermarket shelves for around 6 weeks! So being able to pick the freshest of the bunch will mean you get the best deal possible.

If you’re unsure your eggs are fresh once you get them home, simply pop them in a bowl of water. If they float, throw them out. If they sink, you’re good to go!
