Man tries to fly to Sydney, but ends up on different continent

The ticket blunder saw the backpacker end up in sub-zero conditions

When Milan Schipper was booking a trip to Australia and found a flight $300 cheaper than the rest, he couldn’t believe his luck.

So the 18-year-old Dutch man, who wanted to enjoy some backpacking in warmer temperatures before starting college, purchased the flight to Sydney.

But instead of ending up on the sunny beaches, Milan had actually booked a flight to Sydney, Nova Scotia, on Canada’s east coast – which was experiencing blizzard conditions.

Milan told CBC Radio that he first realised something was wrong when he landed in Toronto for a stopover and saw the Air Canada plane that would take him to his final destination.

‘The plane was really small and so I figured, would that make it to Australia?’ he said. But he decided to board it anyway.

‘I saw the flight plan was going to go right, not left. It was about the time that I realised there was another Sydney.’

‘I felt terrible. But there was nothing I could do about it because I was already up in the air.’

He arrived in Nova Scotia sporting nothing but a thin t-shirt and trackpants. Admitting his blunder to airport staff, they quickly booked him a flight back Toronto and his amused father picked him up from the airport.
