Ambulances were called to a house in Sydney’s southwest on Sunday afternoon after a one-year-old girl was found floating unconscious in the backyard pool.
She was rushed to Campbelltown hospital, but tragically was unable to be revived and was announced dead a short while later.
The news comes only a day after a similar incident involving a 22-month-old boy occured in Sydney’s north-west suburb of Castle Hill.
The little boy is believed to be in a critical condition at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Toddler deaths from drowning in Australia:
- An average of 30 children per year aged between zero and four die from drowning, more than half of those in swimming pools, according to the Royal Life Saving annual report.
- 81% of toddler deaths from drowning occur from falling into water.
- In a third of these cases, the children were left unsupervised for as little as 5 minutes.
To keep your little ones safe this summer:
- When near water with small children, make sure they’re within arm’s reach of a supervising adult at all times.
- Restrict access to pools with a fence and gate that automatically latches. Never allow the gate to be propped open.
- Teach children how to swim and about water safety as early as possible.
- Learn proper rescusitation skills through a CPR course and be familiar with rescusitation techniques for different ages of children.
