Video footage has been released of the of the police rescue of Kala Brown, who was kept as a sex slave by serial killer Todd Kohlhepp.
The 30-year-old woman was found chained up in a shipping container by police inSpartanburg County, South Carolina following her abduction two months previously.
Investigators sawed and then pried open the bin to rescue Brown according to police body cam footage released by prosecutors on Friday.
In the rescue video, once the container was opened after the 10-minute operation, officers walked in carefully with their hands on their guns and found a clothed Kala Brown, sitting on the floor with a chain around her neck stretching to the wall.
‘Do you know where your buddy is?’ an officer said, referring to Kala’s boyfriend, Charlie Carver – who was later found to be shot dead by officers.
‘Charlie? He shot him,’ she said.
‘Who did?’
‘Todd Kohlhepp shot Charlie Carver three times in the chest, wrapped him in a blue tarp, put him in the bucket of the tractor, locked me down here. I’ve never seen him again. He says he’s dead and buried. He says there are several bodies dead and buried out here,’ she said.
Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright says police heard Kalabanging on the walls of the container as they served a search warrant in 2016.
‘It was pretty emotional, to say the least,” Wright told reporters at the time. “When she was found, she was chained like a dog — she had a chain around her neck. It’s only by God’s grace we found that little girl alive.’
