Hundreds of people witnessed the horrifying moment a light plane crashed into the water, killing the two occupants inside.
Crowds were gathered at Swan River in Perth, WA, for a sky show as part of Australia Day celebrations when the plane, carrying experienced pilot, Peter Lynch, and his female passenger landed in the water.
‘I was watching the show and all I saw was the plane just nose dive into the water,’ witness Natasha Eyles said.
‘As it hit the water you could see the plane break into two.’
Boats rushed to the wreckage to try and help the pair inside, but to no avail.
The annual fireworks display which was meant to take place was cancelled out of respect for the victims.
Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Brown said the plane would remain in place overnight before being subject of a thorough investigation.
‘It’s really important that we preserve that scene to make sure that we can extract everything we can to find out why this tragic event occurred,’ he said.
Today, Peter Lynch was being remembered as a caring family man with a passion for aviation.
