Queensland parents Sarah and Luke Allister told 60 Minutes their 14-month-old son Hunter is ‘lucky to be alive’ after their horrific ordeal on Fraser Island.

The family were on a camping trip in April this year with Hunter, their four-year-old daughter Harper and Sarah’s mother Shaurne and slept in a campervan.

At around midnight, Luke realised he could hear Hunter’s screams – but they were coming from the bush.

‘When I got there, the dingoes got him by the back of the head and was pulling him into the bush,’ Luke told reporter Charles Wooley.

‘First instinct when I felt him, I just thought it was saliva – but then I realised there was a lot of blood,’ he added

Luke managed to save Hunter, but the pack of dingos continued to circle and taunt the pair as Sarah and her mother called for emergency services.

A helicopter thankfully arrived and airlifted Hunter to hospital soon after.

Hunter sustained serious head injuries – including a fractured skull – and spent five days recovering in hospital.
