A dead humpback whale had been found in the Amazonian jungle, baffling investigators who had no idea how it got there.

The eight-metre long and six-metre wide carcass was discovered after vultures were spotted swooping overhead.

A group of Brazilian biologists raced to the scene in order to determine how the large mammal landed in an area so far from water, according to The Sun

Usually, whales are only found in the Amazon Basin during summer – but this particular whale was found in the dead of winter.

It was estimated to be only a year old and thought to have died from swallowing marine plastics.

Investigators also suspected the whale had become entangled in the mangroves after being flung ashore by high waves.

‘The humpback whale stranded in Soure, island of Marajó, was a cub about one year old and 8 m long,’ NGO Bicho D’água said in a statement.

The carcass was eventually found to be around 15m from the closest beach.
