An autistic teenager bought $NZ2400 around-the-world return flights using his dad’s credit card details which were pre-loaded into an old phone.

The boy’s father anonymously told the Sunday Star Times he realised his son bought the expensive flights from Adelaide to Rio Di Janeiro after getting an email from Webjet.

He gave the old phone to his son without knowing his credit card details were auto-filled, making it easy for the teenage boy to complete the booking.

‘When we discovered it was real my heart started to flutter and I ended up on the phone to Qantas and Webjet trying to sort it out all weekend,’ he told the paper.

‘We think what’s happened is he’s seen a Webjet ad on TV while my wife was making tea in the kitchen.’

The father spent the weekend on the phone trying to explain the unique situation to Qantas and Webjet.

He had no choice but to cancel the $2400 booking and ask Qantas for a refund.

At first, the airline told the family they could cancel the flight but still had to pay the cancellation fees.

But they eventually agreed to issue them a full refund.
