In May of 1979, 6-year-old Etan Patz left for school and never came home again.
Now, almost 40 years later his family welcome closure with Etan’s killer – convenient store worker Pedro Hernandez – being convicted of murder.
The New York jury found Hernandez guilty after he confessed to police in 2012 saying that he had lured Etan by offering him soda before choking him in the basement of the store. Etan’s body was then stuffed in a garbage bag and put in a box before being taken out with the trash.
Etan’s parents Stan and Julie are desperate for closer after living with the heartbreak of losing their boy 38 years ago.
‘The Patz family has waited a long time, but we finally have found some measure of justice for our wonderful little boy, Etan. And I’m really grateful,’ says Stan Patz, according to FoxNews.
The disappearance of Etan Patz is considered to be the case that improved how law enforcement handle missing children cases – including the printing of children’s faces on milk cartons.
Missing Children’s Day is held annually on May 25 – the very day that Etan vanished.
