Two years ago Christina Schell abandoned wearing a bra because she finds them uncomfortable.
The 25 year old didn’t think much more of it until a few weeks later she received a letter from her employer.
Schell, who worked as a waitress at a golf club, couldn’t believe what she read. It stated: ‘Women must wear either a tank top or bra under their uniform shirt.’
Because she often served customers outdoors in hot weather, she didn’t want to wear an undershirt ether.
‘It was absurd,’ she told CBC. ‘Why do you get to dictate what’s underneath my clothes?’
After confronting her manager, Schell was told that the rules were for her protection.
‘He said, “I know what happens in golf clubs when alcohol’s involved.”‘
She refused to comply with the new dress code and was promptly fired. Schell has now filed a complaint with the Human Rights Tribunal against her employer Osoyoos Golf Club in Osoyoos, B.C, Canada. A date for the hearing has not yet been set. .
‘It’s gender-based and that’s why it’s a human rights issue,’ she said. ‘I have nipples and so do the men.’
