A New Jersey couple got the shock of their lives when police arrived at their home in the early hours of the morning, demanding explanations for the tens of thousands of illicit photographs shared on their wifi network.
Investigators were unable to find any pictures on the couple’s computers, however they soon realised that their internet connection was not password-protected.
With this knowledge they widened their search and soon arrested the couple’s neighbour, a 55-year-old man who had used their open network to download and distribute hundreds of videos and thousands of images of child pornography.
Cybersecurity attorney, Leeza Garber, says ‘unfortunately, the older generation is certainly a target for hackers like this, because they may not be understanding what kind of technology they’re putting in place.’
She recommends securing your network with a password that is hard to guess, and considering using software that allows you to see who is using your network.
