Victoria Resetnjova, 1, was playing with her 14-year-old sister at a children’s park in the UK county of Kent, when she was picked up and mauled by the pit-bull cross.
“It was so gruesome,” a witness told The Sun.
“The child’s scalp had been ripped off.”
Other kids present at the time of the attack bravely fought off the dog and wrestled the victim from the jaws of the animal.
“It was absolutely horrific and there were about six children, aged eight to twelve covered in blood who witnessed it all,” an onlooker revealed.
“The baby’s head was being shaken in the dog’s mouth and it was covered in blood.”
One woman recounted how she had watched on as a passerby retrieved the victim’s skin from the ground.
“It was like picking a wig off the floor. It was awful,” she said.
“I kept passing towels to them to stop the blood. The girl was going blue and lost consciousness but they brought her back.”
Police were called to the scene and were quick to shoot the beast dead.
Two people have since been arrested in connection with the incident.
The victim is now in hospital in a stable condition with her parents at her bedside.
