The motivation mantras to remember if you want to lose weight

Defining your steps to success - by Rachel de Hossan

The motivation mantras to remember if you want to lose weight

We get it, it’s been on your to-do list for a while now, but life just seems to get in the way. It happens, but enough with the excuses, today we’re here to help you get back on track. Did you know that if you are overweight or obese, losing even a modest amount of weight (5–10%) can mean significant health benefits? Remember these motivational mantras to have you on your way to smashing your health goals.

Long term changes outweigh short term results

We’ve all heard “it’s a marathon, not a sprint” before, but for long term success it is crucial to make changes that are sustainable in the long run and avoid quick fixes and fads. Setting goals is one of the first steps you need to take to reach your target weight. As well as weight loss goals add in some personal goals. For example, being able to walk 3km without stopping, doing five push-ups in a row, eating five portions of vegetables and two portions of fruit a day, all of these will help you strive for more than just a number.

The scales aren’t everything

When it comes to losing weight, the scales shouldn’t be your only guide. Take pictures at the beginning of your journey and note how your favourite pair of jeans fits. Over time these will be some of the best indicators of your journey’s success and the best way to keep motivated.

Food to nourish

Part of the path to success will be making sustainable changes. Traditionally, when people made changes to lose weight, you’d envision a bowl of lettuce, a smoothie and a heavily restricted diet. That’s a thing of the past, maintain a healthy eating regimen that lasts and look to include food that provides fuel and nourishes your body.

Enjoy the journey

Make the most of the process and enjoy the journey you’re on. You’ll be getting fitter and feeling better from the inside out. Make a note in your phone each day of how you feel out of ten. Initially, as your body starts to adjust it won’t be easy but looking back on this later will show you how far you’ve come.

Nobody's perfect

Just like anything mistakes do happen and you’re not the only one who makes them. Instead of throwing in the towel, get back on the horse right away. Don’t be too hard on yourself, one bad meal for example won’t ruin your goals.

Treat yourself

Reward yourself for your hard work. Instead of going out for your favourite meal switch up your “treat.” It could be a spa day, a new dress or a weekend away with friends. Working towards your reward gives you short term goals and is also far more enjoyable.

You can’t have one without the other

If you are serious about getting results, then you will need to commit to more than exercise alone. A holistic approach is key. Aim for a regular exercise routine but also make sure that your diet, sleep patterns and stress as well other crucial lifestyle choices are in check.

There isn’t a one size fits all approach

Everyone is different and the same goes for losing weight. Speak to your doctor who can perform a health assessment and develop a healthy weight loss plan that suits your lifestyle and needs.
