Some of the most dangerous and violent cities for citizens and tourists alike are located in South America.

The Mexican Anti Violence Think Tank ranks the most dangerous places in the world in terms of homicide rates per 100,000 residents.

It is also measured by level of drug trafficking, gang wars and poverty.

With record high murders, muggings, assaults and organized crime, cities in Venezuela, Mexico, El Salvador and Colombia are considered highly dangerous for residents and travellers.

According to United Nations data, a staggering one-third of global homicides occur in Latin America even though the region comprises just 8 per cent of the world’s entire population.

In Australia, Roy Morgan Research found NSW suburbs such as Lakemba, Fairfield and Wiley Park, Victoria’s Dandenong and Cranbourne, Brisbane’s Redcliffe and Cooloongup in Perth as growing areas for crime.

2. San Pedro Sula, Honduras

San Pedro was cited as the second most dangerous city in the world as there was a recorded 111.03 homicides per 100,000 residents.

3. San Salvador, El Salvador

San Salvador was cited as the third most dangerous city in the world as there was a recorded 108.54 homicides per 100,000 residents.

4. Acapulco, Mexico

Acapulco was cited as the fourth most dangerous city in the world as there was a recorded 104.73 homicides per 100,000 residents.
