An East Cannington couple had to be hospitalised after a brutal bashing outside their home in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police say between 12.30am and 12.50am, two groups of males were involved in an altercation outside the Crawford Street house of the victims.

One of the groups then left the area, while the other group stayed.

The 40-year-old resident was allegedly assaulted when he went to his front yard after hearing knocking on his front door.

Police say he was knocked to the ground and assaulted as he lay there. His 29-year-old female partner attempted to help him, but was also allegedly assaulted.

The assailants fled in a vehicle but police arrested them in nearby Elizabeth Street.

Four males, two 18-year-olds and two 17-year-olds, have been charged over the incident and are due to appear in court on Monday.

Both victims were taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital. The man received a broken ankle which will require surgery and abrasions, while the woman received bruising.
