The devastated parents of a 15-year-old schoolgirl have released a statement after she was killed by an allegedly out of control Lamborghini.
Sophia Naismith was killed and her friend Jordyn Callea, 15, injured at around 10pm on Saturday night, when they were on a footpath on Morphett Road, Glengowrie, SA, in front of the House of Tien Chinese restaurant. They were allegedly struck by a Lamborghini driven by a 37-year-old man.
Sophia Naismith’s mum and dad, Pia Vogrin and Luke Naismith, paid tribute to their girl on Monday afternoon (June 24).
‘Nothing prepares you for times like this. Sophia was the centre of our universe. Our cherished first born,’ read the statement.
‘Best friend to her sisters. Adored by her grandparents. Admired by her aunts, uncles and cousins. Good friend to many. Loved by all.’
A talented volleyball player, Sophia had been selected in the South Australian team to play in the School Sport Australia volleyball championships in August.
‘It is with heartbreaking sadness that we offer our condolences to the Naismith family on the loss of Sophia,’ wrote Volleyball SA on Facebook.
‘As always, we as a community mourn the loss of one of our own and offer our sincere support to her family in whatever way they need us.’
The driver of the car involved in the crash, which has the numberplate PSYKO, had been leaving a nearby car event and also runs a YouTube channel where he reviews high performance cars.
The driver was charged with causing death and injury by dangerous driving. He was given bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on July 31.
