Olympic distance runner David Torrence was found dead at the bottom of a swimming pool at a condominium complex in Arizona, on the morning of August 29.
According to local reports, authorities arrived at the swimming facility at 7:30 a.m, shortly after firefighters removed the 31-year-old’s body from the pool.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities do not suspect foul play, however, local medical examiners are investigating the sportsman’s sudden passing.
Torrence began his career competing for the US and in 2014, he set the record in the indoor 1,000 meters by running 2:16.76.
He signed a professional contract with Nike and went on to win multiple U.S. titles on the track and on the roads.
In 2016, Torrence changed his international allegiance from USA to his mother’s home country of Peru.
He competed at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in the 5,000 meters and set a national record of 13:23.20 in the first round.
Several Olympians have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to the late talented runner.
