‘My boyfriend wants to propose to me with a ring meant for his ex-girlfriend’

What should she do?

A concerned woman has asked the internet for advice after she discovered her boyfriend planned to propose to her with a ring meant for his ex-girlfriend.

The unnamed bride-to-be told Reddit she is ‘unsure’ what to do after her boyfriend asked if he could propose with a customised ring originally intended for his now ex-partner.

‘My boyfriend and I have always talked about getting married,’ the woman said. ‘Recently he asked if I was okay with him giving me an old engagement ring.’

She said her boyfriend had been with his ex for four years and had purchased the ring before she ended their relationship.

Despite it being three years ago, the boyfriend still has the old ring, which apparently cost a lot of money to design.

‘I’m not sure what the actual value of the ring was, but according to him he spent few thousand dollars on the ring in total. This was not even including the money spent flying to and fro,’ she added.

‘He asked if I was okay with him giving me the old ring because it’s just been sitting in his cupboard, and he felt like there was finally a purpose to that old ring.’

By not purchasing a brand new ring, the woman said it will allow the couple to save up money for more important things.

‘However something in my heart just can’t get over the fact that the ring was originally made for someone else in mind. He assured me that she never wore it, but I just don’t want something that wasn’t made for me.’

‘Am I being unreasonable? I don’t need an expensive ring, and I don’t need diamonds, but I’d like the ring to be bought with me in mind.’

After asking if she should ‘suck it up and accept the old ring’, Reddit commenters fired up.

‘As a jeweller, I’d say keep the diamond, and reset it. A diamond is a diamond, and the mounting should be just for you,’ one person said.

‘No girl! You’re not being unreasonable. Rings carry stories and history. If it’s not a story you want to carry around on your finger for the rest of your relationship, you are totally within your rights. Also, that ring was customised for another woman, not for you. Get another ring!’ another wrote.
