Following the death of cult leader Charles Manson, Mia Farrow has paid tribute to her late friend and fellow actress Sharon Tate, who was murdered by one of his followers.
Hours after the news broke on Monday, the 72-year-old actress tweeted, ‘Thoughts with my sweet, beautiful friend, Sharon Tate and with each of Manson’s victims.’
In another tweet, the Golden Globe winner wrote, ‘Charlie Manson is dead – good riddance.’
The tweet accompanied a photo of Tate, who was eight months pregnant with husband Roman Polanksi’s baby when she was stabbed to death in 1969.
Farrow and Tate were close friends at the time of the murder, and Farrow starred in Polanski’s film Rosemary’s Baby a year prior.
On August 9, 1969, Manson directed his followers, who believed he was Jesus reincarnated, to kill the 26-year-old Tate and four others at the home she was renting in the Benedict Canyon area of Los Angeles.
Polanski was out of the country at the time of the Cielo Drive killings.
The other victims were celebrity hair stylist Jay Sebring, 35, Voytek Frykowski, 32, coffee heiress Abigail Folger, 25, and Steven Parent, 18, a friend of Tate’s caretaker.
Manson and more than 20 of his followers were arrested at ranches in the California desert in the following months.
He and three followers, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten, were found guilty in a trial and sentenced to death in 1971.
The death sentences were commuted to life in prison in 1972 when the death penalty was abolished in California. Manson was denied parole twelve times.
Manson died of natural causes on Sunday at the age of 83, leaving behind two sons, Charles Luther Manson and Valentine Michael Manson.
His first son, Charles Manson, Jr, died by suicide in 1993.
