A Kiwi mum is warning other parents to check their children’s lunch boxes for hidden dangers.
Grace Bollen, from New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty, was cleaning her children’s bento-style lunch boxes when she noticed something foul.
Between the layers of plastic she found coats of mould, which had been festering away without her realising.
‘So today, something in me prompted me to pry open the glue in the kids lunch boxes. I saw a little black spot in the corners while washing,’ the mother wrote.
‘This is what I found. I’m absolutely appalled. I feel awful that my children have been eating lunch out of these.’
She added: ‘The children’s lunch boxes have been hand washed each night & left open to dry. Blue lunch box has been used for around 9 months. Yellow for about 12 months.’
Grace said she was ‘absolutely horrified’ and promptly threw away the mouldy containers.
She warns other mums and dads to only buy lunch boxes that can be disassembled and cleaned properly.
After sharing her post, Grace stated she had been in touch with the companies that supplied the containers.
‘Stuck on you & Lunch box inc [are] working to rectify the problem with the manufacturers & make them water tight. Please check with your supplier if there are any issues with yours,’ she wrote.
