A cunning plan on behalf of inmates at an Alabama jail led to a eleven criminals escaping after they tricked an inexperienced guard using peanut butter.
The Walter County Sheriff, James Underwood, explained to reporters in a press conference that an inmate had used peanut butter to disguise the number above his cell as the number to a door that led to outside the prison.
The prisoner then asked a jailer to let him into his cell, tricking them into opening a door directly to the outside word.
The men tore off their orange jumpsuits and scaled the fence, protecting their hands from the razor wire with blankets from their cells.
The sheriff says that 12 convicts between the ages of 18 and 30 ‘went off in every direction.’ 10 of them were recaptured and surrendered without incident.
One man, Brady Andrew Kilpatrick, managed to evade officers for a whole day but was eventually recaptured. He was in prison for marijuana posession.
Underwood says the prisoners are always trying to get away with something. ‘You have to stay on your toes. This is one time we slipped up. I’m not going to make any excuses.
‘They took advantage of a young fellow that hadn’t been here very long.’
