A little boy could officially be Australia’s biggest baby after he tipped the scales at a record-breaking 6.3kg.
Maoama Ala was born via an elective caesarean this week, a decision made after his 35-week scan showed he would be a big boy.
But staff had no idea he would become the biggest baby born in Victoria – and possibly Australia.
“Double zero, triple zero doesn’t fit him, so he’s wearing three to six months clothes,” Mum Teu Ala said.
“Everyone was asking me, ‘are you having twins?’ and I was like ‘I wish’ haha.
“The main thing was not his size, but he was coming out healthy and happy.”
Maoama is the fourth child for the Ala family, who have nine-year-old twins and a six-year-old boy.
Obstetrician Lauren De Luca said baby Maoama was “off the charts”.
“Once (Teu) knew we were expecting such a big baby, she did decide for an elective Caesar, which is a sensible option,” Dr De Luca said.
And mum Teu says the big arrival hasn’t deterred her trying again, with the couple planning on a having a fifth child.
