A woman in the U.S was left shocked after discovering she’d been charged money to hold her own baby after a c-section.
An image of the itemised bill, shared to Twitter, shows a charge labelled ‘skin to skin after c-sec’ to the tune of $39.95.
The caesarean itself cost the mother a staggering $3106.28, alongside $61.96 for a lactation consult.
The bill has been widely shared across the internet, sparking discussions about the poor healthcare system in the U.S.
When it was originally shared on Reddit, the father of the baby said he and his wife ‘had a chuckle’ at the absurd charge.
‘During the C-section the nurse asked my wife if she would like to do skin to skin after the baby was born. Which of course anyone would say yes too. We just noticed it in the bill today,’ he wrote.
‘The nurse let me hold the baby on my wife’s neck/chest. Even borrowed my camera to take a few pictures for us. Everyone involved in the process was great, and we had a positive experience. We just got a chuckle out of seeing that on the bill.’
After it was shared on Twitter, many people were suitably outraged.
‘How can they even charge for that? You’re literally holding your baby,’ one woman wrote.
