A woman has died while jogging in a Melbourne park after a tree fell on her and crushed her to death.

At around 8:30am today (Monday August 12) the woman believed to be in her late 30s was struck by a tree in Princes Park. Parkvile. Ambulance crews and the fire brigade were at the scene within five minutes and the woman was rushed to Royal Melbourne Hospital but sadly later died.

Photos from the scene show a large Elm tree on its side with its roots on show. It can be seen across a path that’s popular with runners, cyclists and dog walkers.

The tree fall comes after a few days of extreme weather in Melbourne with icy blasts and wild weather warnings all weekend.

A statement from Victoria Police read: ‘Police will prepare a report for the coroner after a woman was struck by a tree in Parkville this morning (12 August).’

‘It is understood she was located with critical injuries about 8.30am and transported to hospital where she later died. No one else was injured during the incident.

‘Road closures are currently in place at the southbound lane of Royal Parade near Walker Street and police are asking motorists and cyclists to avoid the area.’
