The grandfather of a toddler who fell to her death on a cruise ship earlier this year has been charged for her death.
The girl identified as Chloe Wiegand was on the 11th deck of the ship playing with her grandfather, Salvatore Anello, when he slipped while holding her and lost his grip.
The Freedom of the Seas vessel was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico when the tragic incident unfolded in July.
Police allege that Anello had been playing a game where he held her up to the glass so she could see outside.
However, he hadn’t realised at the time that the glass was open and the girl fell straight through.
The heartbroken man is now facing a charge of negligent homicide and will appear in court on November 20.
It’s understood that both her sets of grandparents, her parents and her younger brother were on the ship at the time.
Tourists on board even reported hearing the little girl’s mum, Kimberley Schultz Wiegand, crying in pain.
Appearing on Today in the weeks after their daughters death, Kimberley and her husband Alan spoke of their grief.
‘I didn’t even know that she went out a window,’ Kimberly cried.
‘I looked over and it wasn’t water down there, it was concrete,’ she added.
‘Honestly to lose our baby this way is just unfathomable.’
