How to spot an ATM fitted with a card skimmer – this everyday hero shows you how.

Among the biggest threats to your bank account’s security is the technology designed to steal your details without you even knowing it.

Top among these are what’s known as ‘card skimmers’. Devices that have been fitted to regular ATMs by people intent on stealing your details. As you enter your card into the ATM the device captures the details which can then be used to access your money. A camera is also set up nearby in order to capture the PIN number being entered. Creepy, right?

That’s where Eli Maguire comes in. The Kiama-based construction worker filmed and posted a video to Facebook showing how to spot these devices, and what to do about them.

Other ways to spot a skimmer:

• Most ATMs have flashing lights around the card slot. If these do not flash there could be a skimmer
• Scratches or gouges around the keyboard area
• Discoloured or odd-looking plastic parts on the machine
• Any loose-fitting or flimsy plastic parts
• Pay particular attention to the keyboard, card slot, and speaker area
