An office worker close to the area has confirmed his building is in lockdown.
Former president of the Muslim Association of Canterbury Mohammed Jama confirmed a man with a gun entered the mosque at 1.40pm on Friday.
Canterbury Police confirmed on Twitter they are responding to a 'critical incident'.
Police have urged people to avoid the area around Deans Avenue, in the centre of the city.
