Carbs aren’t scary, we don’t need to be afraid of them. In fact, carbohydrates are good for us! Shock horror I know. Somewhere in life, the narrative of ‘some carbs are good carbs’ got lost and we were left with the lie that all carbs are bad.
Complex carbs such as oats, quinoa, fruits, sweet potato and wholegrain breads supply us with long lasting energy to sustain us ALL day for the fun and the work parts of the day. These foods are such an important source of fibre and prebiotics for a healthy digestive system, and we all know you need a healthy gut for a happy mind and a happy mind for a healthy body. Filling our bodies with the good stuff means we keep our blood sugar levels stable as well as preventing mood swings, sugar cravings and sleepless nights.
If you’re currently on a weight loss life transformation, reducing down your carbs may be something to pop on your radar. Regardless of your life journey, you should definitely be adjusting to filling yourself full of good carbs (no more Tip Top but yes please more seeds and whole bread). Enjoying life isn’t about denying yourself, and I certainly do not care for the word “diet.” It’s all about that lifestyle uphaul, making smart choices and swaps to ensure you still get to enjoy the meals that you love, for a fraction of the guilt.
1. Noodling around
Veggie noodles! One of the most welcome appliances in my kitchen is my spiralizer and I strongly encourage that you invest. You can find a basic model for about $30 to create zucchini, carrot or even sweet potato noodles! It is a scrumptiously delish substitute to those carb heavy, dense pasta dishes, so you still get to fill that craving of the comfort winter warmers without the guilt. I like to give them a quick spin around the pan, a dip into some boiling water or even eat them raw!
2. These ARE the noodles you’re looking for!
Need something for when those veggie noodles aren’t quite cutting it? Keep your eye out at health food stores and independent grocers for black bean and edamame noodles as they are blessed with 50% less carbohydrate than wheat and rice based noodles, and 70% more protein. They have also left gluten behind so friendly for the whole family! And just as easy to prepare as your normal average run of the mill pasta too. What more do I need to say to convince you?
3. Roasted vegetable lasagne
Are you sensing a delicious theme? By replacing pasta sheets with vegetable slices, it means your ultimate comfort food has had a healthy makeover and can now fit back into your everyday life. When preparing your feast, thinly slice and roast an array of different vegetables to replace the pasta sheets (faves are zucchini, eggplant, pumpkin and sweet potato). When assembling, easily layer your veggies with your sauce, spinach leaves and cheese.
4. Rice to the occasion
Your fried rice days are not over! You can still soak up that delish curry sauce, don’t you worry. Except this time you’re not steaming that rice, enter the cauliflower rice – the low carb substitute you never thought of. Easy peasy to make! All you need to do is place half a head of cauliflower into a food processor, and blend to a coarse crumb resembling rice. Heat in a lightly greased pan for about 5 minutes, and season with salt and pepper.
5. Do the monster mash
I promise you that you won’t lose your fave comfort foods when you’re cutting down on the carbs. We’re talking little adjustments and swaps! Instead of a creamy potato mash to accompany your steak, try steaming then mashing some pumpkin with carrot instead bringing you a vibrant mash of the most colourful proportions. Feel like honouring the traditional mash instead? Try steaming and mashing up some cauliflower. Taste sensation with a side of health.
6. Pancakes!
You should never deny yourself your Sunday morning pancakes, and now you don’t have to! Almond meal or banana based pancakes means they are very much still on the menu, just with a side of enjoyment instead of guilt. Simply combine 1 cup almond meal with 2 eggs, ¼ cup milk of choice, 1tbs olive oil and 1tsp salt. Cook as you would normal pancakes, and serve with Greek yoghurt and berries. And then leave that pan ready cos there are sure to be requests for more!
7. Berry nice
Berries aren’t just a summer thing! You can grab frozen berries from the coldest part of the supermarket and they are perfect for frozen berry smoothies. Some fun facts about berries: They are the lowest carb fruit! A whole punnet of strawberries only has 7g of sugar, compared to an apple which has 18g! Use berries as your primary fruit source and add in some avocado, greek yogurt, LSA or some chia seeds to make it thick and creamy. They are a good source of soluble fibre, which can thicken a smoothie without adding extra carbohydrate (like if you were to add in a banana).
