A five-year-old boy will undergo surgery tonight after his face was mauled by a dog.
Sylvanus Sandy was at Mills Park in Beckenham yesterday afternoon with his family and church group celebrating a birthday.
Sylvanus and his friends were playing fetch with a kelpie-staffy cross named Bronson when he was attacked.
“I ran away and then I started to crying and my mum did too,” the boy said.
Dog owner Scott handed his pet to police after the attack and today spoke with rangers.
“Nah I didn’t see it, my head was turned,” he said.
“The kids were sort of throwing sticks and cans and telling him to fetch.
“I said ‘don’t do that, the dog doesn’t fetch’.”
This evening Sylvanus will have surgery to stitch up wounds that doctors say will leave him scarred for life.
“We are so lucky it didn’t get to his eye,” his mum Christiana said.
“I hope this will never happen to another child out there because it is so heartbreaking.”
Sylvanus’ parents say they forgive Scott but want the dog put down.
The pet has been seized by rangers while the council decides its fate.
