'The most beautiful Carpool Karaoke' of children with Down syndrome is going viral

It brought James Corden to tears. - by Anna McClelland
  • 21 Mar 2018

A group of 50 mums and their children have made their own version of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke, and it’s quickly garnering more views than many of the TV host’s famous clips  - because the children in the video all have Down Syndrome (and they are all excellent).

Made to coincide with World Down Syndrome Day (March 21) and accompanied by the hashtag #wouldntchangeathing, the video took months of filming, with mothers from around the UK submitting their footage, SBS reports.

“The idea is, we are just normal mums, we love our kids, they love us, and they are just like other four-year-olds, we wouldn’t change them,” Rebecca Carless, who appears in the video and is mother to four-year-old Archie, tells the BBC. “Archie loves it, he spots himself straight away and grabs my hand to do the swaying bit.”

50 Mums | 50 Kids | 1 Extra Chromosome

Since it was uploaded on Friday, the video has had over one million views on Facebook and close to half a million on YouTube. It quickly caught James Corden’s eye, as well as singer Christina Perry, whose song is in the video.

Down Syndrome is a genetic condition, not a disease, in which people are born with an extra chromosome (47 instead of 46). Other than that, people with Down Syndrome are not fundamentally different to anyone else, Down Syndrome Australia states. Many people with the condition are able to lead normal lives, although some require greater levels of care. You can find out more here.
